Classifying and Protecting Your Data
Teams Security for your Data
Information Protection and Teams Governance is crucial to organisations that store data across modern hybrid workplace solutions such as Microsoft 365. With Microsoft 365 Compliance & Information Protection, you can classify and protect your data with Sensitivity labels to label, content mark, and encrypt emails and documents to assure your Cybersecurity.
Data Loss Prevention and Governance
Utilising Teams Governance
Information Protection also protects against loss and leakage with Data Loss Prevention, which helps you prevent accidental sharing of sensitive and confidential information such as credit card numbers or medical data across your IT Security landscape.
With data protected, it also needs to be properly governed, and the key to this is to understand what data you have, how long you are required to retain it, and just as importantly – when it should be deleted. Retention Policies and Retention Labels ensure that data is correctly governed.

FAQs
Can data protected by label encryption be circumvented by copying it onto a USB drive?
No, with Microsoft Information Protection, the encryption travels with the protected content and anyone attempting to access that content must have a valid Microsoft 365 logon with permissions to the label.
How can we ensure that DLP policies are configured appropriately for our organisation without causing disruption to our users?
Best practice is to roll out DLP policies in a crawl > walk > run approach by first setting them in test mode so admins can monitor the effects, then enable with policy tips to train users on how to work with DLP. Then when they are working as required they may be fully enabled.
How can I understand my data and make informed decisions on how to apply classification?
Content Explorer in the Microsoft 365 Compliance Center can help you to analyse your data to see if it contains sensitive Information types, and classify it so the appropriate protection can be applied.
