Project Scenario: Website Development
Imagine you are managing a project to develop a new website. This project involves several tasks, including design, coding, content creation, and testing.
Lead Task Example:
Task A (Coding the website) → Task B (Content Creation)
In this scenario, 2 weeks have been allocated to coding the website. However, it is realised that the content creation for some sections of the website can begin 1 week before the coding is fully completed. To achieve this, create a new dependency and adding a Lead time to the task. This overlap allows the content team to start working on sections of the website that are coded and ready for content, effectively reducing the total project time without waiting for the entire coding phase to finish.
Viewing this in the schedule shows that the content creation can now start earlier.
Lag Task Example:
Task C (Final Testing) → Task D (Launch)
After coding and content, the next step is final testing, followed by the website launch. However, it is anticipated that more time will be needed review testing results and make necessary adjustments.
To achieve this lag time can be used for 2 weeks between the completion of final testing and the website launch. This 2-week period allows the team to address any issues found during testing and prepare for a smooth launch. The lag ensures that you have a buffer to refine and polish the website before it goes live.
Viewing this in the schedule, there is a 1 week lag time to allow a gap before testing and launch.
