Introducing Microsoft Purview
In case you missed it, Microsoft has updated the naming of their Azure Purview and M365 compliance-orientated. These tools sit alongside Microsoft Priva and offer an end-to-end compliance solution within the Microsoft ecosystem.
Whilst name changes generally seem to get a bit of a hard time, I, for one, welcome the consistency (and unification) this update brings. The tables below display the old product names and their updated monikers - but there's more to this announcement of Microsoft Purview than simply a name change.
Whilst the tools have existed for some time, unifying both risk & compliance, and unified data governance into Microsoft Purview serves to highlight how each solution is integrated into the others. This is especially important if you're looking to increase stakeholder confidence and avoid fragmented systems that result in a higher total cost of ownership, additional complexity and administrative overhead, and the potential for data exposure due to protection gaps.

Functionality Updates
Endpoint DLP for macOS: If your organisation's device estate incorporates macOS, you'll be pleased to hear that Endpoint DLP is now available for macOS 10.15 and higher. Activities (or actions) such as: copy to USB removable media, copy to network shares, print, copy to clipboard, upload to cloud, and access by unallowed apps can be restricted, greatly enhancing your data loss prevention strategy.
New Sensitive Information Type (SITs) and Named Entity Detection: Detecting and classifying data has been enhanced thanks to the general availability of name entity detection as well as the introduction of 51 new SITs. Named entity detection allows the detection of items that aren't easily identified through methods such as regular expressions.
Co-authoring on encrypted files: With co-authoring of encrypted files available on Windows and macOS, this Microsoft Purview update enables the preview of co-authoring on mobile too. Now employees with devices such as an iPad can collaborate on encrypted Office documents with their counterparts on desktops, benefiting from features like autosave and improving productivity.
Multi-stage retention: Announced as a public preview* this will bring additional functionality to data lifecycle management. Where previous options were limited to deleting content, triggering a disposition review, or doing nothing, data can now receive a new retention label automatically.
Insider Risk Management's detection and investigation capabilities has been extended to support 3rd party alerts via Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps.
eDiscovery (Premium) receives additional functionality which improves detection of relevant data in Microsoft Teams, as well as new reporting capabilities.
Communication Compliance supports new features, such as expanded optical character recognition, machine learning model highlighting, reduced detection-to-investigation time, and step-by-step onboarding guidance.
Compliance Manager's continuous compliance assessments are now generally available, allowing organisations to constantly track their compliance-related improvement actions against assessment templates.
