Microsoft Copilot Cowork is now generally available

Microsoft has officially made Copilot Cowork generally available, and it’s a big shift in how AI is used at work.

Until now, Copilot has helped you write, summarise, and analyse.

Cowork goes further. It actually does the work.

From AI assistant to AI teammate

Most people are used to AI tools that respond to prompts:

  • “Draft an email”
  • “Summarise this document”
  • “Create a presentation”

Copilot Cowork flips that model.

Instead of asking for help with individual tasks, you define an outcome, and Cowork:

  • Creates a plan
  • Works across Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Teams, documents, data)
  • Executes the task step by step
  • Delivers a completed result

It’s designed to handle long-running, multi-step work, running in the background until it’s finished.

What can Copilot Cowork actually do?

At a practical level, Cowork can:

  • Send, reply to and organise emails
  • Schedule and manage meetings
  • Create documents, spreadsheets and presentations
  • Search and analyse information across your organisation
  • Run multi-step workflows and recurring tasks

The difference is simple:

It doesn’t stop at a draft – it follows through to completion.

Real-world examples already in use

During early rollout, organisations have used Copilot Cowork to:

  • Compare thousands of documents in hours instead of days
  • Analyse sales pipelines and identify at-risk opportunities
  • Automate repetitive operational processes

This isn’t about saving a few minutes on an email; it’s about removing entire chunks of manual work.

Copilot Cowork changes how teams operate

  • Less time spent coordinating across emails, files and meetings
  • Fewer manual, repetitive tasks
  • Faster turnaround on complex work
  • More time focused on higher-value activity

In short:

You define the outcome. Cowork gets it done.

A new way of working with AI

This launch marks a shift from AI as support to AI as execution.

Instead of helping you complete tasks, Copilot Cowork helps take them off your plate entirely, while keeping you in control with approval checkpoints for key actions.

For organisations already using Microsoft 365 Copilot, this is the next step in unlocking real productivity gains.

What next?

General availability means Cowork is now ready for broader adoption across organisations.

The opportunity isn’t just to use it, but to rethink:

  • How work gets done
  • Which processes can be automated
  • Where teams are still spending time on low-value tasks
